People in Louisiana appreciate our unique culture and the laissez le Bon temps rouler attitude. For those that don’t know French- that means “let the good times roll!”. So, over 50 years ago, Louisiana members of congress decided to bring a piece of our Louisiana culture and Mardi Gras to Washington, DC. This resulted in the creation of The Mystic Krewe of Louisianians!
Now, it is still going strong and there are 3 days of extensive socializing among several thousand people. On Thursday night, there is a cocktail party called ‘Louisiana Alive.’ This so much fun! They bring chefs from a lot of well known restaurants around the state of Louisiana and they set up tables and prepare their speciality dishes. To name a few from last night: crab cakes, oysters raw and fried, gumbo, crawfish étouffée , bread pudding !!! They also have numerous bars set up, several Cajun bands, dancers, acrobats, and lots of beads!!!! It is a great night to mingle, get a taste of Louisiana and have a great time!!
Friday night there is the Captains Dinner Dance. It is a black tie event where Everyone enjoys a great dinner and lots of dancing! The Krewe brings a band from Louisiana and there is a presentation of the festival queens and the princesses. The princesses are young ladies that are freshman in college that are chosen as debutantes. Everyone enjoys great food, dancing and a show!
On Saturday, there is the grand finale- the Mardi Gras Ball. The ballroom at the Washington Hilton is transformed to a Mardi Gras paradise! It is a black or white tie event and the several hundred member Krewe dress out in their Mardi gras costumes and the king and queen of the ball ride around on their float and throw great Mardi grad beads!! There is great music, great dancing, and lots of partying.
It is an event like no other. People that come for the first time are always amazed that this kind of production is pulled off miles away from Mardi GRAS’ home. It is such a fun event and a great event for people to network while enjoying themselves! It is a great promotion for our state and it’s resources. It really makes you appreciate Louisiana, it’s uniqueness and all it has to offer.
So, make sure that one day you make plans to attend this amazing event! You won’t believe how much fun you will have!
